"Robert gives helpful specific tips as well as a general orientation to the philosophy of plein air watercolor painting."
Sophie Torrance (Yosemite Art Center Class)

The poem that I recited at the end of the 2007 workshop is below.  RRD

Being an Artist of Life

We stand before a grand canvas: our life.
We prepare the colors of  our thoughts--rich or poor, false or true.
We must be ready to feel the warm and cold hues of our emotions--our fear and joy, our love and sadness.

In our hands we hold the finest of brushes: time, the instrument which allows us to express our world of experience in each and every spontaneous stroke.
We visualize this grand canvas as we want it to be, and commit to painting our image with integrity.
Each shading and shape, each color and hue; each smudge, drip, slip, tone, shadow, and value will be determined by us.
We are responsible for each stroke of our brush.

And although others may misunderstand or criticize, if we stand for who we are and what we do, most will respect us and admire our courage.

And when this grand canvas, our life, is finished, may the world in some small or large way be a better place.
May those who have touched our canvas with their eyes and hearts, grow to know the joy and wonder of being an artist of life.
We paint each day,
And we create every now!

Report from  the Greece 2008 watercolor workshop.

Here are some highlights from my Greek painting trip.  Except for Olympic Airlines staff who gave us some problems, everything went well.  We had a great dinner in Athens at Psara's The Old Tavern Restaurant in the old section of Athens, Plaka, our first night in Athens. The next day some of us visited the Acropolis and some of us traveled to Pireaus and got on a ferry for Aegena, an island south of Athens.  In Aegena we toured the island in a passenger van, had lunch at the beach, drew and painted most of the afternoon and returned to Pireaus by ferry and our hotel in Athens after a great first full day in Greece.  While in Mykonos many of us went by boat to the uninhabited island of Delos, one of the most important ancient sites in Greece.  While I was in Mykonos I was asked to show my 1968 film, A Day on Mykonos, to the Mayor of Mykonos and friends.  They were all very grateful for a look back in time at the way Mykonos used to be.  They said they wanted to make me an honorary citizen of Mykonos.  From Mykonos, we traveled to Santorini by ferry boat stopping in Paros for a couple of hours to change boats.   Santorini and the small town of Ioa were as spectacular as ever.  I saw my good friend, the Greek painter, Christoforos Asimis.  You can see his  work in the inspirational Art Gallery Phenomenon, on the cliff’s edge in Thira.  My group’s favorite island was Folegandros, a small island southwest of Santorini in the Aegean Sea.  We stayed at the Fata Morgana Apartments and many said that it was there favorite accommodation.   Folegandros at this time of year is fairly quiet--not as many motor scooters and cars zooming around the countryside--and the cliff side scenery is spectacular.  Finally we traveled by ferry to Milos on Speedrunner II, a  large hydrofoil that travels over the water at about 35 knots.  In Milos we were also inspired by the spectacular view from the terrace in front of the main church in Plaka, Milos.  When I go back to Greece on my own, I will be sure to visit this place again.  Of course the food was delicious and our group of 16 produced  many wonderful drawings and paintings.
